It was a religious and political center for the Igbo people. Instead of using an army, Nri grew through its shared beliefs. People joined the kingdom by making a ritual oath. This allowed Nri to have influence over a large part of Igboland. The kingdom was a safe haven for many different people. It was even a place where slaves could find freedom. If a slave stepped on Nri soil, they were considered free.

A priest-king called an Eze Nri led the people. This leader held divine authority over religious matters. The Eze Nri did not lead with military force. Instead, he used ritual power to guide the land. When an Eze Nri died, a long waiting period began. This period could last seven years or even longer. During this time, people looked for signs to find a new leader. The new king would then go on a symbolic journey to Aguleri. There, he would visit sacred shrines and be anointed with white clay.

The history of Nri begins with a legendary figure named Eri. Some stories say Eri was a "sky being" sent by God. He is credited with bringing order to the people. Some traditions say Eri arrived in 1043. Other accounts place him in the region around the 1500s. Royal burials have been found that date back to the 9th century. The kingdom reached its peak in the 18th century. Later, the rise of the Benin and Igala kingdoms changed things. The Atlantic slave trade also brought hard changes to the region.

Nri culture was full of important rules and symbols. They used taboos to teach people how to behave. These rules covered many things like animals, objects, and speech. A tender palm frond, called an omu, was a very important symbol. It was used to protect people or special objects. The Nri people believed that violence was a bad thing that polluted the earth. Because of this, they focused on peace and ritual. Officials called ndi Nri traveled to keep harmony. They often had special facial marks called ichi.

The Nri people were also very skilled at making art. They created beautiful objects using bronze casting. Some of these pieces, like those from Igbo-Ukwu, are very old. They made detailed shapes like snails, birds, and chameleons. These artists even included tiny details like small insects. Nri also helped create a system for trading goods. They used names for the four days of the week to organize time. This helped people know when to exchange items and knowledge. Even today, Nri remains a traditional state in modern Nigeria.
