It was in the area we now call Nigeria. A priest-king ruled the land. His title was Eze Nri. He was a holy leader. He did not lead with an army. Instead, Nri grew by sharing its ways. People joined Nri by making a ritual oath.

The kingdom was a safe place for many. It was a haven for people who were rejected. Even slaves were set free in Nri. If a slave stepped on Nri soil, they became free. This happened after the tenth Eze Nri ruled.

Nri people were also great artists. They made fine art from bronze.

They made shapes like snails, birds, and chameleons. These bronze works are very old. Some date back to the 9th century. The Nri also used a system of titles. Men could earn these titles to help lead.
