It sat in lands we now call Angola and the Congo. A leader called the Manikongo ruled the land. He held much power over many provinces.

In the early days, leaders made alliances through marriage. One leader, Nimi a Lukeni, helped build the kingdom. He made deals with other rulers to grow his land.

His family ruled for a long time.

The capital city was Mbanza Kongo. It was a very busy and crowded place. Many people lived there to be near the king. This helped the king stay strong and keep control.
