Long ago, many small groups lived there. They each had their own leaders. A man named Njimbe helped start the kingdom. He made smart choices to bring groups together. He built many new towns. He even built a capital city called Buali.

The people spoke a language called Kikongo. They were part of a group called the Vili.

Rules for the kings changed over time. Early on, the king picked leaders from his family. These leaders ruled four different areas. Later, things became more complex. New leaders grew wealthy from trade. This changed how the kingdom was run. Sometimes, a woman helped lead the land. A person called a 'Queen or Chief Governess' held power. After one king died in 1787, no new king was picked for a long time. During those years, a special priest helped look after the dead king.
