These pillars had the royal arms of Portugal on them. Cão put them on land to mark his path. He reached the mouth of the Congo River. He also met people from the Bakongo kingdom. Cão took four local people back to Portugal.

He went on a second trip from 1484 to 1486. He went back to the Congo River. He sailed 170 kilometers up the river. He reached the Yellala Falls.

He carved words into the rocks there. This record told of his voyage. Cão also brought the four people back to Africa. Some say he died during this second trip. People found his stone pillars many years later. They still show where he traveled.
