It stays inside the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The river starts in the southeast near Katanga Province. It flows north toward the city of Kisangani. At this point, the river becomes the Congo River.

The river has many different parts. Some parts are smooth for boats to sail. Other parts have fast rapids or big falls. Near Nzilo Falls, a dam makes power for people. The river also flows through marshy lakes. These include Lake Upemba and Lake Kisale. The river forms a border for Upemba National Park. This park protects many plants and animals.

Many smaller rivers flow into the Lualaba. These are called tributaries. Some big ones are the Luvua and the Lukuga. A long time ago, people thought the river flowed to the Nile. An explorer named Henry Morton Stanley traveled down it. He proved that the water flows to the Atlantic Ocean. This was a big discovery for the world.
