It sits on the border of two countries. These are Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The lake is part of the Congo River system. It sits between the Luapula River and the Luvua River.

The lake is shaped like a long line. It is about 120 kilometers long. It is about 45 kilometers wide. The water is deep in the north. It is shallow in the south. The western shore has steep hills. The eastern shore is much flatter.

Many rivers feed the lake. The Luapula River flows in through wet swamps. This helps keep the water level steady. The Kalungwishi River also flows into the lake.

Fishing is a very important job here. Many people live in small villages along the shore. They catch many types of fish. One type is the tilapia.
