It begins in the middle of Angola. The river flows east for a while. Then it turns north to form a border. This border is between Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Later, the river turns west. It eventually flows into the big Congo River.

Most of the land around the river is rainforest. These green forests cover the equatorial areas. The soil in this region is sandy and not very rich. However, the river is very important for trade. Many of its smaller rivers are easy to sail on. This makes them good for moving goods.

You can also find diamonds in the river. Some diamonds are found in the river beds. The Kwango River is a major part of this area. People call its valley the diamond heartland of Angola. In fact, many diamonds come from this river. About 60% of the diamonds in Belgium come from the Kasai. They come here to be cut and shaped.
