The river starts where the Mbomou and Uele rivers meet. It flows west at first. This part of the river makes a border. It sits between the Central African Republic and the DRC. Then the river bends toward the southwest. It flows past Bangui. Bangui is the capital city of the Central African Republic. After that, the river flows south. It forms a new border. This border is between the DRC and the Republic of the Congo. Finally, the river joins the Congo River at Liranga.

Boats use the river to travel. It is an important way to move things. People also had big plans for this water. A plan called Transaqua was made in the 1960s. It would move water to Lake Chad. This would help people fish and farm. Many people in Africa would benefit from this.
