Ubangi River

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Ubangi River is a massive waterway located in Central Africa. It serves as the largest right-bank tributary of the Congo River. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Ubangi is significant because it moves vast amounts of water through the region. It also acts as a natural boundary for several different countries. This river is a vital part of the African landscape and its water systems.

The river begins at a specific point called a confluence. This is where the Mbomou River and the Uele River meet. The Mbomou River has a mean annual discharge of 1,350 m3/s. Discharge refers to the volume of water moving past a point. The Uele River has a mean annual discharge of 1,550 m3/s. From this meeting point, the Ubangi flows toward the west. It then bends toward the southwest to pass the city of Bangui.

The course of the Ubangi creates several international borders. From its source to just below Bangui, it marks the boundary between the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bangui is the capital city of the Central African Republic. After passing this city, the river turns to flow south. In this southern section, it forms the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. The river finally reaches its end at Liranga. There, it empties into the Congo River.

Geological history suggests the river was once very different. During the early Pleistocene epoch, the upper reaches of the river followed a different path. Scientists believe the water originally flowed into the Chari River and Lake Chad. Later, the Congo River captured this water. This process changed the entire drainage system of the region. This shift shows how much the Earth's surface can change over long periods of time.

The scale of the Ubangi is quite impressive. The mean annual discharge at its mouth is 5,936 m3/s. Near the city of Bangui, the discharge levels vary. The average flow at Bangui is approximately 5,000 m3/s. The river and the Congo River together create a major transport artery. This means the water provides a path for river boats. These boats move between the cities of Bangui and Brazzaville.

Because the river holds so much water, people have proposed large engineering projects. In the 1960s, a plan called Transaqua was suggested. This scheme aimed to divert water from the Ubangi to the Chari River. The goal was to replenish Lake Chad. Doing this could provide fishing and better agriculture for tens of millions of people. This would help populations in Central Africa and the Sahel region.

Other ideas for water transfer appeared in the 1980s and 1990s. A Nigerian engineer named J. Umolu proposed schemes for water resources. An Italian firm called Bonifica also proposed ideas for inter-basin water transfer. These are plans to move water from one river basin to another. In 1994, the Lake Chad Basin Commission proposed a similar project. In 2008, leaders from member countries committed to the diversion project. They even requested proposals for a feasibility study to see if it could work.
