It is the biggest tributary of the Amazon River. This means it is the largest river that flows into the Amazon. It provides about 15% of the water for that whole area.

Many large rivers join the Madeira to make it strong. Because of this, the water is often brown and cloudy. This is called whitewater. Some of its smaller rivers have clear or dark water instead.

The river is a busy place for travel. Large barges carry grains like soy and corn. They move these goods to big ports. These ships then travel far away to Europe and Asia.

Some parts of the river have rapids. These are places where the water flows fast over rocks. Today, some rapids are under water from large dams. These dams make power for people to use.

Many animals live in the river. There are more than 900 kinds of fish there. You might even see a Bolivian river dolphin. This dolphin only lives in this river system.
