It begins in Knoxville, Tennessee. This happens where the French Broad and Holston rivers meet. From there, it flows through Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky. It eventually flows into the Ohio River near Paducah, Kentucky.

Many people use the river for work and fun. Large boats carry heavy things like steel. This helps cities like Chattanooga and Decatur grow. Many people also use the river for play. More than 13,000 small boats travel through the river locks each year.
