history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Lunda Empire was a large group of states. It sat in parts of Africa. This includes the Congo, Angola, and Zambia.

Early leaders helped shape the land. A man named Nawej ruled around 1695. He created the role of the queen mother. This woman helped pick new leaders. The kings lived in a center called a musumba. It had high walls and paved roads.

The empire grew very large. At its height, it was 300,000 square kilometers. The Lunda people were strong. They had many people in their group. They even had military advisors from other cities. They used marriage to make ties with other kings. This helped them rule more land.

One leader named Mwata Kazembe started a new kingdom. He lived near the Luapula River. But the empire did not last forever. In the 1800s, the Chokwe people invaded. They had guns. This caused the Lunda kingdom to end. Later, new nations divided the Lunda lands. This included parts of Angola and the Congo.
