Long ago, the Chewa people moved to this land. They came from a place called Katanga. Two main groups arrived at different times. The Banda clan arrived first. They were called the Pre-Maravi. Later, the Phiri clan arrived. They were called the Maravi.

The Maravi had kings called the Kalonga. The empire grew very large. The Kalonga sent family members to lead new areas. These leaders paid respect to the king. They often gave him ivory.

People in the empire were busy. They grew crops and raised animals. They also traded with others. They sold cloth and iron tools. In return, they got glass beads and copper.

The name Malawi means flames. The Chewa saw a lake that looked like flames. This was Lake Malawi. The empire lasted for many years. It began in the 1400s. It ended in the mid-1800s.
