This empire was very important because it connected many different lands and people. It lasted from the early 1400s until the middle of the 1800s. The empire grew to reach the Luangwa River in the west and the Zambezi River in the south. It even reached as far as Mozambique Island in the east.

Life in the empire worked through a system of leaders and shared rules. The main leader was a king called the Kalonga. Other smaller leaders had to show respect to the Kalonga by paying tribute. They often gave him valuable ivory to show his power. The empire also used special ceremonies to keep everyone together. One ceremony was called the Mlira ceremony. During this time, royal family heads met at the capital to honor the spirit of the Kalonga.

History tells us that the Chewa people moved to this land in stages. Long ago, the Banda clan arrived first. These people were called the Pre-Maravi. Later, the Phiri clan arrived and they were called the Maravi. The Maravi people brought a new way of ruling with kings. When they reached a place called Msinja, they joined their ways with the Pre-Maravi. This helped create a single, large state.

Many different people helped shape the empire over hundreds of years. The Phiri clan was led by the Kalonga. The head of the Banda clan was a priestess called the Makewana. She held ritual authority at a rainmaking shrine on Kaphirintiwa Hill. The empire also grew through family connections. The Kalonga sent his sons and relatives to start new areas. These new leaders were given special items, like an iron stool, to show their office.

way of life in the Maravi empire was very busy. People practiced agriculture by growing crops and raising animals. They were also great traders who connected with people near the Indian Ocean. They sold things like cloth and iron tools to other lands. In return, they brought in glass beads and copper. The name Malawi comes from the Chewa word for "flames." This is because the people thought Lake Malawi looked like flames or a mirage.
