This vast land stretched across parts of modern Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, and Zambia. The area was filled with savanna-woodland, forests, and many rivers like the Zambezi and Limpopo. Animals such as lions, elephants, leopards, and deer lived throughout the landscape. The empire was also known by names like Mwenemutapa or Munhumutapa. This title came from the Shona word for a leader of conquered lands.

History tells us that the empire grew through movement and trade. Some stories say the founder, Mutota, led an army north to find salt. Other stories suggest people moved slowly from Great Zimbabwe to the northern plateau. Mutota was a hunter and a warrior who built a capital at Chitako Hill. He built a stone enclosure there and gave land to his allies. These allies helped him manage the growing territory. Over time, the empire became a center for important trade routes.

Mutota was succeeded by his son, Matope, who was a very famous ruler. Matope led many military campaigns to expand the empire's borders. He conquered the Tavara and Tonga people to the east. This gave the empire control over important trade paths along the Zambezi River. These paths were used by Muslim Swahili traders from Angoche. By controlling these routes, the empire grew much stronger. Matope is still widely revered in many traditions today.

As the empire grew, new leaders and conflicts changed its course. A leader named Nyahuma Mukombero conquered the valuable region of Uteve. This area was important because it helped trade with places like Kilwa and Sofala. Around 1490, a governor named Changamire I led an army to take the kingship. Later, a king named Chikuyo took power and ruled for many years. He fought against different groups to keep the empire together. During this time, Portuguese traders began to arrive near the coast.

In the 1560s, the empire faced new challenges from European visitors. A Portuguese man named Gonçalo da Silveira arrived at the court of King Negomo Mupunzagutu. Silveira wanted to teach the people about Christianity. This caused tension with local religious leaders and Muslim traders. After Silveira died, the Portuguese Crown sent Francisco Barreto to invade. They wanted to gain control of the empire's gold reserves. These events marked a period of great change and struggle for the Mutapa people.
