It sits on the Beira Corridor at an altitude of 750 metres. This location helps link the coast to the inside of the continent. A major railway line runs through the city too. This path connects the city of Beira to Bulawayo. The city is also near the Zimbabwean border. It is about 95 km away from that border.

The name Chimoio has a very old story. It comes from a great hunter named Chimoio. He was a son of a chief named Ganda. Long ago, Chimoio killed an elephant in another clan's land. The chief of that clan ordered him to be killed. Ganda asked to bury his son in that land. A relative stayed there to watch over the grave. The name Chimoio means "Great heart" in the local Citewe language.

This history connects the land to the people who live there.

Later, the Portuguese people arrived in the area. They wanted to find the Mwenemutapa Empire. The Mozambique Company began to settle people there for farming. They first built a town called Vila Barreto in 1893. This town grew because of the new railway line. In 1899, the headquarters moved to a place called Mandigos. Mandigos was known for having many great harvests. This attracted many merchants and people to the area. In 1916, the name was changed to Vila Pery. This name honored a Portuguese governor named João Pery de Lind.

As Vila Pery grew, it became a center for many jobs. People worked in cotton and textile production. The SOALPO company built a town called Soalpo in 1944. This helped the area grow even more. The city became an official city in 1969. During this time, the local football team won a big championship. Many important buildings were made during these years. The Vila Pery Hotel opened in 1920. The Caldas Xavier Primary School was built in 1948. The Montalto Cinema was also built in 1969.

Today, Chimoio is a very different place. Its name changed back to Chimoio in 1975. This happened after Mozambique became an independent country. One famous site is the Praça dos Heróis. This is a square with a large mural about history. Many people also visit the Cabeça do Velho rock. This rock looks like an old man's head. In the rain, water looks like tears on his face. Local people believe this is a sacred place for ceremonies. You might even see monkeys or antelopes in the forest nearby.
