Chipata has a long and interesting history. It was once called Fort Jameson. This name honored a British politician from the 19th century. The name "Fort" was used because the local government offices were once fortified. These offices were called a "Boma." Between 1900 and 1911, the town was the capital of North-Eastern Rhodesia. During World War II, the town welcomed 80 Polish refugees in 1941.
