This makes it a great gateway for people moving between countries.

Long ago, different groups of people lived in this area. The Baleya people lived in a large village called Mukuni. Later, the Batoka people became the main group in the area. In 1855, a Scottish explorer named David Livingstone arrived here. He was the first European to see the Zambezi River nearby. A local chief named Sekeletu showed him the Victoria Falls.

The city was later named to honor his travels.

In the late 1800s, the British South Africa Company began to rule the area. They wanted to find minerals and other natural resources. People used dugout canoes to cross the river at a place called Old Drift. Later, they used iron boats and steel cables to cross the water. A British settlement grew around this crossing point. Around 1900, people moved to higher ground to stay safe from malaria.

This higher area became the town of Livingstone.

Livingstone has played many important roles in history. From 1911 to 1935, it was the capital of Northern Rhodesia. It was also the capital of Zambia's Southern Province for a long time. The city grew because of trade, farming, and timber. A railway was even built to help move goods and coal.
