Because of its size, it creates a massive sheet of falling water. The area around the falls is also full of many different plants and animals. This makes the region a very special place for nature lovers.

The way the falls work is quite amazing to see. The Zambezi River flows over a flat layer of dark rock called basalt.

Suddenly, the river reaches a sharp edge and drops into a deep crack. This crack is a narrow opening that leads into the First Gorge. All the water from the river pours through this one small gap. This creates a huge curtain of water that falls vertically. Sometimes, the water is so strong that it creates a massive spray. This mist can rise very high into the sky.

People have known about these falls for a very long time. Many African groups have a long history of knowing this site. The Tonga people call the falls Shungu na mutitima. Other groups use the name Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means "The Smoke That Thunders."

A Scottish man named David Livingstone saw the falls in 1855. He was the first European to record seeing them. He named the falls after Queen Victoria. Before he arrived, the falls were already well known to local tribes.

There are many interesting facts about the size and shape of the falls. The spray from the water can be seen from a long way away.

On a full moon, you can even see a "moonbow." This is a rainbow made by the light of the moon. The river changes a lot during the year. There is a rainy season from November to April. During the dry season, the water level drops quite a bit. In 2019, the flow was the lowest in a hundred years. This happened because there was very little rain.

Today, many people visit the falls to see their beauty.

Both Zambia and Zimbabwe have national parks to protect the area. These parks help keep the plants and animals safe. You can see different parts of the river, like the Second Gorge. Some people even visit the "Boiling Pot," which is a deep pool. The river continues to flow through many different gorges after the falls. This entire area is a wonderful part of the natural world.
