Kaieteur Falls

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kaieteur Falls is one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth. It sits in the middle of Guyana in South America. The falls are located in Kaieteur National Park. This park is in the central Essequibo Territory. The water flows over the Potaro River. This river eventually empties into the Essequibo River. The Essequibo is the longest river in Guyana.

The waterfall is famous for its huge size and power. The first drop is 226 metres high. This is the fall from the sandstone cliff. After that, the water hits steep rocks called cascades. These extra steps make the total height 251 metres. This is about four and a half times taller than Niagara Falls. It is also twice as tall as Victoria Falls.

There is a massive amount of water moving every second. The average flow rate is 663 cubic meters per second. Not many waterfalls have both great height and so much water. Upriver from the falls, the land is a flat area called a plateau. This plateau reaches toward the Pakaraima Mountains. The water travels through a very wet rainforest environment.

Indigenous nations have known about these falls for a very long time. A Patamona legend tells a story about the name. It may be named for a chief named Kuik'tuwuk. He was a Toshao, which means a leader. He supposedly sacrificed himself to a god named Makonaima to save his people. Europeans first noticed the falls in 1870. A British geologist named Charles Barrington Brown found them.

Today, many people travel to see this amazing place. You can fly into the Kaieteur International Airport. It is only a 15-minute walk from the top of the falls. The falls are even famous in movies and TV shows. They appear in the film The White Diamond. They are also in shows like River Monsters and Gold Rush. Even some science fiction shows use the falls as a setting.
