Long ago, the Dutch were the first Europeans to make colonies there. Later, the British took control in the late 1700s. The country was known as British Guiana for a long time. It finally gained independence in 1966. It became a republic in 1970.

Guyana has a very unique way of speaking. It is the only country in mainland South America where English is the official language. Many people also speak Guyanese Creole. This is a language based on English. The population is very diverse. It includes people with Indian, African, Indigenous, Chinese, and Portuguese roots. This mix of people is a legacy of the country's colonial past. The country is also a member of the Commonwealth Caribbean.

Recently, Guyana has seen big changes in its economy. In 2015, people found crude oil under the ocean.

Since then, drilling has started to bring this oil to the world. This discovery helped the economy grow by 49% in 2020. Some say it is one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Because of these oil reserves, Guyana is a major part of global energy trade. The country is working to manage this growth for the future.
