It sits along the coast between the Orinoco and Amazon rivers. Most people use the name to talk about three specific places. These are Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

You can also find parts of this region in Venezuela and Brazil. The area is very spread out and not crowded. Most people live along the coast because of the thick jungles to the south. This makes the Guianas one of the most sparsely populated places on Earth.

Long ago, the land was home to native Arawak people. They lived in small groups across the area. Later, Carib groups also moved into these river valleys. Over many years, these two groups met and lived together. They shared many things and their cultures mixed. By the time Europeans arrived, the two groups were so similar that they were hard to tell apart. This mixing created a unique way of life in the region.

Many explorers came to the coast looking for riches. Christopher Columbus first saw the area in 1498. Later, a man named Walter Raleigh explored the land in 1594. He was searching for a legendary golden city called El Dorado.

He believed this city was located near a large lake called Lake Parime. While he never found the gold, his stories made other people very interested in the area. This led to many more ships arriving from Europe.

Different countries fought to control the land for a long time. The Dutch, British, and French all set up colonies here.

The Dutch often built settlements upriver to stay away from wet marshes. They focused on trade and building networks. Later, the focus changed to growing sugar on large plantations. Many areas changed hands many times during wars between these nations.

Today, the three Guianas are separate and have their own identities. Guyana has been independent since 1966. Suriname became independent in 1975. French Guiana is actually an overseas department of France. Together, these three places have a population of over 1.7 million people. Most of these people still live near the ocean. The history of many different countries makes this part of South America a very interesting place to study.
