Pico da Neblina is the tallest mountain in Brazil. Its name means Mist Peak in English. This is a perfect name because thick clouds often hide it.

The mountain sits in the state of Amazonas. It is part of the Serra da Neblina. This range is in the Guiana Highlands. The peak is very close to the border with Venezuela. In fact, the summit is only 687 metres inside Brazil. It sits near another high point called Pico 31 de Março. This neighbor sits right on the border line.

Getting to the mountain is a very big job. It is located in a very remote area. Most climbing trips start in the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira. You cannot just drive to the mountain. You must hike through the thick tropical rainforest for many days. A trip can take four days just to get there.

The mountain is inside a national park. This park is also part of the Yanomami people's reservation. You must get a special permit to visit the area. You also need to travel with an accredited local guide.

People did not know much about this peak for a long time. It was discovered quite recently in the mid-20th century. The area is very hard to reach and has few people. Some say a pilot saw it while flying through clear skies. In 1954, a botanist named Bassett Maguire visited the area. He saw the high summit but did not name it. He thought the mountain was in Venezuela. Later, a Brazilian expedition in 1962 found the summit was in Brazil. They gave it the name Pico da Neblina.

Scientists have worked hard to find the exact height. In 1965, a man named José Ambrósio de Miranda Pombo measured it. He used a tool called a theodolite to find the height. For many years, people thought it was 2,995 metres tall. In 2004, a cartographer named Marco Aurélio de Almeida Lima used GPS tools. This new tool was much more accurate. The official height was later changed to 2,995.28 metres. This change happened because of new math about the Earth's shape.

The mountain looks like a sharp rock tooth or a pyramid.

It rises very quickly from the low lands. The ground near the base is only 100 metres above sea level. Then the mountain shoots up to about 2,000 metres. The rock is made of sandstone and older metamorphic rocks. It is the highest point in the region east of the Andes mountains. While it can be cold at the top, there is no snow. It stays near the equator, so frost is very rare.
