It was the capital of a powerful kingdom. This city is the largest stone structure from before colonial times in Southern Africa. The site is now a famous World Heritage Site. It is located near a place called Masvingo. The name "Zimbabwe" comes from Shona words. It likely means "large houses of stone" or "venerated houses."

The Great Enclosure was built later, during the 13th and 14th centuries. It has huge walls that are 11 meters high. These walls are made of dry stone. This means the builders did not use mortar to glue them together.

History shows that people sometimes tried to hide the truth about the city. For a long time, some leaders tried to say that black Africans did not build it.
