This ancient place covers about 4 square kilometers of land. Many people lived there long ago. Scientists estimate that 10,000 to 20,000 people lived in the city around AD 800. The site is famous for its decorated ceramics and giant stone blocks. These huge stones are called megaliths. They show how skilled the builders were.

Building the city required a very organized way of life. The people had a complex economy based on farming and herding animals.

Instead of having markets, the leaders controlled most of the resources. This is called elite redistribution. The leaders gave people what they needed to do their jobs. Some people were farmers or herders. Other people were skilled artisans. They made beautiful pottery, jewelry, and textiles. As the city grew, people began to specialize in these specific jobs.

History tells us that the city grew steadily over many centuries. It became a very important Andean city between AD 375 and AD 700.

Researchers have worked hard to find the exact age of the site. For a long time, some thought it was many thousands of years old. Now, most experts believe the site was founded around AD 110. The city reached its height in the first millennium AD. However, the society seems to have collapsed around AD 1000. A long drought might have made the land too dry for farming.

There are many amazing stone structures to see at the site. The Akapana is a huge mound shaped like a cross.

The Pumapunku is another platform made of massive stone blocks. One stone block there is estimated to weigh 131 metric tonnes!

Another famous spot is the Kalasasaya, which is a large courtyard. Inside this courtyard, explorers found the Gateway of the Sun. This gateway has beautiful carvings of animals and other beings. The Semi-Subterranean Temple is also unique because it is a sunken courtyard. Its walls are covered with many different stone heads.

Tiwanaku was a very special place for religion and culture. It sits in a valley between two sacred mountains named Pukara and Chuqi Q’awa.

People likely traveled there for religious ceremonies and rituals. The city also had connections to other groups like the Wari. They shared similar styles of art and symbols. Later, the Inca people also built cities with similar architecture. This shows how the ideas from Tiwanaku helped shape the world around it.
