The city is a very important discovery for history. It shows us how the very first large groups of people lived together. Because it is so important, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2009.

The city was built in a very organized way. It was split into two main parts by the Supe River. The "Upper Half" had six large complexes. These included big pyramids and open plazas for people to gather. The "Lower Half" had smaller homes and a place called the Temple of the Amphitheater.

The people in the Upper Half were likely wealthy leaders. They lived in large buildings and ate special foods like sea lion. The people in the Lower Half were likely workers. They lived in smaller rooms and ate mostly plants and fish.

Many people worked to find and study this city over many years. Max Uhle first found Caral in 1905. He did not realize the hills were actually pyramids. Later, in 1948, Paul Kosok studied the site more deeply. In 1975, an architect named Carlos Williams made detailed records of the valley. Most recently, Ruth Shady has explored the desert to find more secrets. She found many temples, houses, and even an amphitheater.

There are many amazing facts about the people of Caral. The city had about 3,000 people living in it. Other nearby sites might mean 20,000 people lived in the valley. They used a tool called a quipu to keep records. A quipu is a piece of textile with many knots tied in it. They also loved music and made beautiful instruments. Researchers found 32 flutes made from condor and pelican bones. They also found 37 cornetts made from deer and llama bones.

Learning about Caral helps us understand the history of the world. This city was thriving at the same time the great pyramids were built in Egypt. It was a busy place where people traded goods. They may have traded with people from the Amazon forest. Caral might even be the model for how other cities were built in the Andes. By studying these old stones, we learn how the first big societies began.
