Many people lived there. Some experts say 3,000 people lived in the city. Other sites nearby might mean 20,000 people lived in the area. The city was split into two parts by a river. One part had big pyramids and large homes. This was for the rich leaders. The other part had smaller homes for workers.

The people of Caral were very smart. They used a tool called a quipu. A quipu is a piece of cloth with many knots. They used these knots to keep records. They also loved music. They made flutes from the bones of birds. They made other instruments from deer and llama bones.

Archaeologists found many things at the site. They found a large shape on the desert floor. This shape is called a geoglyph. It looks like a human face with long hair. This city helps us learn how the first cities began.
