Mohenjo-daro was one of the world's first major cities.

It was a huge part of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation. This group of people lived in what is now Pakistan and North India. Mohenjo-daro was built around 2500 BC. It was a very advanced place for its time. Many people lived there in large, organized groups.

At its peak, about 40,000 people called this city home. It lived alongside other famous groups like ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

The city was built with a very smart plan.

Most buildings were made of fired or sun-dried brick. The city had two main parts. The first part was a high area called the Citadel. This area held public buildings and large halls. The second part was the Lower City where people lived. Most houses had inner courtyards and sometimes even two stories.

Many homes even had private rooms for bathing.

Water was very important to the people of Mohenjo-daro. They were experts at moving and storing it. They built over 700 wells throughout the city. This meant there was one well for every three houses. They also used a clever system of covered drains. These drains ran along the streets to carry waste away. This helped keep the city clean by moving waste toward the Indus River.

One famous building was the Great Bath. It was a large brick pool waterproofed with bitumen.

Archaeologists found the city many years after it was left behind.

R. D. Banerji first visited the site in 1919 or 1920. Later, leaders like John Marshall and Mortimer Wheeler led big digs. They found many amazing things in the dirt. These included gold and jasper jewellery. They also found copper tools and stone scrapers.

There were even small toys for children to play with.

We still wonder why the people left this great city.

Some experts think large floods covered the city in mud. Others think the land was worn out from using it too much. The city was abandoned a long time ago. In 1980, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This helps protect it for the future. Today, people still study the ruins to learn about our past.
