The Indus Valley Civilisation was a very large and important group of people. They lived a long time ago in the northwestern part of the Indian Subcontinent. This group lived from 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE. Their most active time was between 2600 BCE and 1900 BCE. They were one of three early civilisations in the world. Other famous groups lived in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Indus people were the most widespread of these three.

These people lived near big river systems. They lived along the Indus River in Pakistan. They also lived near the Ghaggar-Hakra river. This river was fed by monsoon rains. Their cities were built with very smart planning. They used baked bricks to make their houses. They even had systems to move water and waste away. These drainage systems were very advanced for that time.

Finding these cities was a big job for scientists. A man named Charles Masson first saw Harappa in 1829. He wrote notes about the large mounds there. Later, the Archaeological Survey of India was started in 1861. Alexander Cunningham was the first director of this group. He studied the site and found strange stamp seals. These seals had a special kind of writing on them.

Many large cities existed in this civilisation. Mohenjo-daro and Harappa were two of the biggest. These cities may have held 30,000 to 60,000 people each. Some experts think millions of people lived in the whole area. There are five major urban centres that we know well. These are Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Ganeriwala, Dholavira, and Rakhigarhi.

We are still learning about how these people lived. We have found many beautiful things like beads and seals.

One big mystery is their language. They used a special script to write things down. However, no one has been able to read it yet. Some scholars think it might be related to Dravidian languages. We also know the land began to dry out later on. This made it hard to find enough water for everyone. This change helped cause the civilisation to end.
