Chavín people were very skilled at managing their environment. They grew crops like maize, potatoes, and quinoa using irrigation systems. They also raised llamas, which are a type of camelid. These animals were used for meat, fiber, and carrying heavy loads. People even made a dried meat called ch'arki from them.

Their metalwork was also very advanced. They knew how to melt metal and use it as solder for gold work.

The most important place for this culture was Chavín de Huántar. This site is located in the Ancash Region of the highlands.

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it is so special. The people built two main parts: an Old Temple and a New Temple. The Old Temple was built between 900 and 500 BCE. The New Temple was added later, from 500 to 200 BCE. The site has many rooms, stairs, and even hidden underground tunnels.

Building these temples required very smart engineering. The builders used white granite and black limestone for their structures. These stones were not found nearby, so they had to be brought from far away. They also built a clever drainage system under the temples. This kept the buildings from flooding during the rainy season. When water rushed through the canals, it made a loud roaring sound. This sound was meant to sound like a sacred jaguar.

One of their most amazing objects is the Lanzón. It is a large granite shaft that is 4.53 meters long. It stands inside a temple and shows a fanged god. They also made stone carvings called tenon heads that look like jaguars. These artistic styles helped connect the people to their religious beliefs.
