The Wari were a very important civilization in ancient Peru. They lived in the mountains and near the coast from about 500 to 1000 AD.

At their strongest, they formed a large group called the Wari Empire. Their main capital city was named Wari. It was located near the modern city of Ayacucho. This center helped them control many different lands. The Wari were a complex society with many different levels of people.

Life in the Wari empire involved many clever ways of working. They were great at farming on steep hills. They built stone steps called terraces to grow crops. This allowed them to grow tubers and maize, which is corn. They also built large storage buildings to keep their food safe. The Wari did not use writing like we do today. Instead, they used a tool called a khipu. A khipu is a record made of knotted strings.

History shows the Wari grew by moving into new areas. Around 600 AD, they moved into the Carahuarazo Valley. This caused some old villages to be left behind. They built a new center there called Jincamocco. The Wari also grew into lands once held by the Moche and Chimu cultures. Some people think they grew through religion or farming knowledge. Others think they grew through military power. This expansion helped spread their way of life across much of Peru.

Archaeologists have found many facts about Wari life and wealth. In 2013, they found a royal tomb called El Castillo de Huarmey. It held three royal women and many expensive items. This showed the Wari had great material wealth. In the city of Conchopata, researchers found remains of over 200 people. This site showed there were many types of people, like servants and leaders. They also found many beautiful things made of silver, copper, and gold. These included bowls, jewelry, and masks.

We can see how the Wari influenced later groups like the Inca. The Inca used similar road networks and terrace farming. The Wari also worshipped a god called the Staff God. This god may have been a predecessor to Inca gods. However, the empire began to fail around 800 AD. A long drought, or a time without rain, made things very hard. By 1000 AD, the capital city of Wari had very few people left. The Wari empire eventually faded from history.
