The Inca Empire was a huge and amazing civilization. It lasted from 1438 to 1533 CE. The people lived in many different places. They had cold mountains in the Andes. They had dry deserts by the Pacific Ocean. They even had hot, wet jungles in the Amazon basin.

Because these lands were so different, the Inca had to be very smart. They used special ways to grow food in every area. This helped everyone in the empire have what they needed. Farming was the most important part of their lives.

Farmers used clever ways to work with the land. In the mountains, they built big steps called andenes, or terraces. These terraces helped plants grow on steep hills. They also stopped soil from washing away.

In the dry desert, they built irrigation systems to move water from rivers to crops. In some places, they used raised beds called waru waru to help with water drainage. Since they did not have large animals to pull plows, farmers used hand tools. One important tool was the chaki taklla, which is a tool powered by a person's foot.

Inca farming was a very organized way of life. They did not use money or a market system like we do today. Instead, they used a system of sharing and working together. The land was divided between the emperor, the religion, and the farmers.

Farmers belonged to groups called ayllus. The leaders of these groups gave land to families based on their needs. Farmers did not pay taxes with coins. Instead, they worked on lands for the emperor for a set amount of time. In return, the state provided them with seeds, tools, and fertilizer.

There were so many different things to eat and use. The Inca grew about 200 varieties of potatoes!

They also grew quinoa, maize, and many fruits like mountain papaya. They raised animals like llamas and alpacas high up in the mountains. These animals were very useful for wool, meat, and carrying heavy loads.

They even used animal dung to help their crops grow. To keep food safe, they built many storage buildings called qullqas. These buildings used cool wind to keep food fresh for up to two years. They even used knotted cords called quipu to keep track of all the food.

Everything the Inca made was part of a big, connected web. They used a system called the vertical archipelago to grow things at different heights. This meant they could get crops from the hot lowlands and the cold highlands. They moved these goods using llama caravans and a long road system.

This helped them share food between different villages. Even though the mountains were hard to farm, the Inca found ways to thrive. Their smart ideas helped them build a strong and lasting empire.
