This fortress was used for both religion and military needs. Archaeologists even found an ancient temple and aqueduct system there.

In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived in the city. Francisco Pizarro arrived in Cusco in November 1533. The Spanish soldiers were amazed by the beautiful Inca buildings. They found streets that were very regular and straight. The Spanish built many of their own structures on top of Inca sites. They used the old Inca stone walls as bases for new buildings. This created a unique mix of Inca and Spanish styles. You can still see this beautiful stone work in many neighborhoods today.
