The city is located south-west of the Tunari mountains. It also sits north of the foothills of the Valle Alto. Many people call it the "City of Eternal Spring." This is because the weather stays mild all year long. It is not too hot like the tropical plains in the east. It is also not too cold like the high city of La Paz.

The name Cochabamba comes from two Quechua words. The word "qucha" means lake. The word "pampa" means open plain. In the past, many lakes sat in this valley. Some of those lakes have disappeared as the city grew. However, you can still see the Alalay and Coña Coña lakes today.

The valley floor sits at an average height of 2,600 meters. The highest mountain nearby is Tunari, which reaches 5,023 meters. The ground in the valley is made of sedimentary fill. This is soil and rock that has settled in the basin over time.

People have lived in this valley for thousands of years. The soil is very fertile and good for growing food. Many different groups lived here before the Spanish arrived. These included the Tiwanaku, Tupuraya, Mojocoya, and Omereque groups. Later, the Inca Empire conquered the area. A leader named Topa Inca Yupanqui ruled from 1471 to 1493. His son, Huayna Capac, turned the valley into a huge state farm. They grew lots of maize to feed the Inca army. They kept the maize in 2,400 storehouses called qollqas.

Spanish explorers arrived in the valley in the 1500s. A man named Garci Ruiz de Orellana lived there in 1542. The city was officially founded on August 2, 1571. It was named Villa de Oropesa by Viceroy Francisco de Toledo. The city grew because it provided food and wood for miners. These miners worked in the nearby city of Potosí. Potosí became one of the richest cities in the world. In 1812, the city saw a famous riot. Thousands of women fought against the Spanish army. Today, Bolivia celebrates Mother's Day on May 27 to honor them.

Cochabamba is a very important place for many reasons. It is the fourth largest city in Bolivia. The 2024 census says 665,505 people live in the municipality.
