An outer ring consists of tall, wide sarsen stones. Each stone weighs about 25 tons. These stones have horizontal lintels on top. The builders used mortise and tenon joints to hold them. This is a unique way to connect stones. Inside the large ring is a smaller ring of bluestones. Some stones stand in groups of two called trilithons.

It was built in several phases starting around 3100 BC. The work continued until about 1600 BC. The very first part was a circular bank and ditch. This was dug around 3100 BC. The large circle of sarsen stones was added later. This happened between 2600 BC and 2400 BC. The bluestones were likely placed between 2400 and 2200 BC.

They found human bones from as early as 3000 BC. These remains included men, women, and even children. Some people buried there may have come from Wales. This is because the bluestones came from the Preseli Hills in Wales. Researchers believe people quarried these stones by hand. They moved them a long distance to reach Stonehenge.

The monument is aligned with the sun at special times. It points toward the sunrise on the summer solstice. It also points toward the sunset on the winter solstice. This shows that ancient people studied the sky. The site was likely a very important place for many generations. It connects the history of the land to the stars above.
