Many royal families have also held weddings inside the building. At least sixteen royal weddings have taken place there since the year 1100.

Because it is so special, it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means people all over the world recognize its importance.

The church has many different building styles. Much of it uses the Gothic style, which was popular in the 13th century.

Some parts look like the older Romanesque style. Other sections use Baroque or modern styles. One very famous part is the Henry VII Chapel at the east end.

History shows that people have lived on this site for a long time. Some stories say a king founded the church a long time ago. One legend says a fisherman had a vision of Saint Peter near the river.

Most historians think monks lived there around the year 959. At that time, the land was an island called Thorney Island. King Edward the Confessor built a large church there between 1042 and 1052.

In 1245, King Henry III started building the large church we see today.

This was a huge job that took many years. During the work, up to 400 workers were on the site at once. They included stonecutters, carpenters, and painters.
