Aachen Cathedral is a famous Catholic church in Aachen, Germany.

It is one of the oldest cathedral buildings in all of Europe. This grand building started as a royal chapel for Emperor Charlemagne.

Charlemagne was buried inside the chapel in the year 814. For a very long time, it was a place of great power. From the year 936 to 1531, thirty-one German kings were crowned here. Twelve queens also had their coronations in this sacred space. Because it is so important to history, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 1978.

The cathedral is built using different architectural styles. The heart of the building is the Palatine Chapel.

This part uses the Carolingian-Romanesque style. It was modeled after a building called the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna. The center of the chapel is a large octagon. An octagon is a shape with eight sides. This shape was a symbol for the eighth day, or Sunday. Many people believe this symbol represents the promise of eternal life. The building also features a choir built in the Gothic style.

Charlemagne began building the chapel around the year 796.

An architect named Odo of Metz is credited with the design. While we do not know the exact date it was finished, a letter from 798 says it was nearly done. By 805, Pope Leo III consecrated the finished chapel.

Later, in 1165, the chapel became a place for many pilgrims to visit. Because so many people came to visit, a Gothic choir hall was added in 1355. This helped the building grow much larger than the original chapel.

The cathedral is filled with amazing art and metalwork.

Near the end of the 8th century, a foundry was used to cast bronze pieces. These include doors, railings, and even statues of a horse and a bear.

One famous door is called the Wolf's Door, or Wolfstür. Its bronze leaves weigh 43 hundredweight. You can also find a bronze pine cone in the entrance hall.

Throughout history, the cathedral has survived many hard times. In 881, it suffered damage during a Viking raid. It was later restored in 983. During World War II, the cathedral was heavily damaged by bombs and fighting.

Some parts, like the 14th-century glass and the Holiness Chapel, were destroyed. It took more than 30 years of work to fix the damage. The cost to restore the cathedral was about 40 million euros. Today, the building stands as a strong link to the past. It connects the time of Charlemagne to our world today.
