arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Carolingian art was a special way of making things during a time of great change. This era lasted about 120 years, from roughly 780 to 900. It happened during the reign of Charlemagne and his heirs. This time is often called the Carolingian Renaissance.

The art was made for the royal court and important monasteries. Most of the best work came from a small, special circle of people. Outside this group, the quality of art was often much lower. These artists worked in many places across modern France, Germany, and Italy. They wanted to create art that felt dignified and grand.

Artists used many different ways to create beauty. One of the most famous ways was making illuminated manuscripts. These are books decorated with bright colors and gold ink.

Some very special books were even written on purple parchment. Artists also carved small figures out of ivory. They made beautiful metalwork and large mosaics too. Some books were given treasure bindings to keep them safe. These covers used gold, jewels, and carved ivory panels.

This careful work made the books look like precious objects.

Charlemagne wanted to bring back the glory of the old Roman Empire. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome in the year 800. He sought a revival of Roman culture and learning.

He needed art that could tell stories better than older styles. He wanted to show he was a great leader like the rulers of the past. This meant blending old Roman styles with Northern traditions. This new style helped artists feel more confident when drawing people. It set the stage for many famous art styles that came much later.

Many different workshops created these works in different styles. The Court School of Charlemagne made very fancy, ornate books.

Later, a workshop at Rheims changed everything with a fresh style. They used quick, energetic brush strokes to draw figures. The Utrecht Psalter is a very famous book from this group.

Another group at Tours made large Bibles with beautiful pictures. In Metz, artists created the Drogo Sacramentary with special decorated letters. Each workshop had its own unique way of working.

This era of art changed how people in Europe made things. Even after the empire ended around 900, the influence stayed. The art helped lead to the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

After a quiet period, new styles like Ottonian art appeared in Germany. These new artists built upon what the Carolingians had started. The way they drew human figures and used decoration lasted for centuries. It was a bridge between the ancient world and the Middle Ages.
