These books often had very rich covers made of gold. Many of these books were made for the church. They were used in grand parades to show their beauty. People would see the bright covers while the books were closed. Some books even had many pages of pictures about Christ.

This art style has a long and interesting history. It came after Carolingian art and came before Romanesque art. It was not a sudden change but a slow shift. The style was mostly used in small cities and big monasteries. It was also used by the emperor and his close followers.

Artists looked at old styles from the past for ideas. They used models from Late Antique and Byzantine traditions. This helped them create a style that felt very strong. They wanted to connect their rule to great leaders of the past.

Many important facts come from the famous Reichenau school. This was a group of artists on Reichenau island. They made very high quality gospel books.

Scholars group their work into three main styles. These are the Eburnant group, the Ruodprecht group, and the Liuthar group. The Liuthar group used very bright colors and bold shapes. Because these books are so special, UNESCO added them to a famous list. This list is called the Memory of the World International Register. They protect these treasures for everyone to see.

Ottonian art shows us how people used art to tell stories. It shows how they linked the church and the state. For example, one book shows a chain of people giving a book to each other. This went from a scribe to a monk to a saint. It even went all the way up to Christ.
