It began with styles brought from the continent. Later, it became very famous across northern Europe. Artists loved bright colors and shiny surfaces. Even though much was lost, the pieces that remain show great skill.

Artists made jewelry like shoulder-clasps and brooches. They also made decorations for weapons and clothes. Many of these items were placed in burials.

Some artists worked with ivory, whalebone, and glass. They even used enamel to add color. These small objects show how much they cared about detail.

Many treasures were lost to history over time.

New rulers often took gold from churches and monasteries. Vikings and Normans also took many items away. Because of this, most metalwork is now found in museums or in the ground.

In the 7th and 8th centuries, a style called Insular art became popular. This style mixed Germanic, Celtic, and Italian ideas. It used complex knots and swirling patterns.
