Between the years 300 and 800, many Germanic tribes moved across Europe.

This era is known as the Migration Period. These people did not build large statues or huge buildings. Instead, they made art that was easy to carry. They preferred "mobile" art that people could use every day. This included jewelry to fasten clothes, tools, and even horse gear.

They often buried these beautiful objects with their owners. Because many items were made of organic materials, they did not always survive the long passage of time.

There were three main styles of art during this time. The first was the polychrome style, which used many colors. This style began with the Goths near the Black Sea. They loved using gold and inlaying objects with precious stones.

One famous example is the Pietroasele treasure from Romania. It includes a large gold eagle brooch. The eagle design likely came from East Asia. The Goths carried this colorful style into Italy, France, and Spain. They even made gold eagle-head belt buckles in Ukraine.

The second style is called the animal style. This art focused on shapes of animals and was popular in Scandinavia and England.

There were different phases of this style. Style I used a technique called chip carving on silver and bronze. It showed animals divided into different sections. Style II appeared around the year 560. In this style, animals looked like long, winding ribbons. These ribbon-like bodies intertwined into symmetrical patterns. Sometimes two bears would face each other to form a heart shape.

As people became Christians, a new style called Insular art began. This art appeared in Britain and Ireland during the late 7th century. It was a fusion of Germanic animal shapes and Celtic traditions.

Monks were very important for this art. They used these designs to decorate holy books, called illuminated manuscripts. They created "carpet pages," which are full pages of patterns with no words. The Book of Durrow is one of the earliest examples. Another famous work is the Book of Kells from the 8th century.

Metalworking also reached a high point during the Insular period. Goldsmiths used a technique called gold filigree. This involved using tiny gold wires to make very detailed patterns.

They made beautiful items like the Tara Brooch. These pieces of jewelry were symbols of high status for important people. Some items, like the jewelry from the Sutton Hoo ship burial, show an older style. These works combined many skills, such as using rock crystal and colorful stones.

This art helped bridge the gap between old traditions and new ways of life.
