The metal plaques are called Ama in the Edo language. They show important scenes and history from the kingdom. These objects help us see the pride and skill of the Edo people.

This method lets them create very fine and detailed shapes. While people call them bronzes, many are actually made of brass. Some pieces even use wood, ivory, or ceramic. The artists used metal from manillas, which were brass bracelets.

These bracelets came from traders from Portugal. The kings helped by providing hard-to-find materials like gold and ivory. This support allowed the artists to make amazing things.

The history of this art goes back many centuries.

Some of the oldest sculptures date to the twelfth century. Much of the collection was made during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. There were even two "Golden Ages" of metalwork. One was during the reign of Esigie around 1550.

They connect us to the great Edo Empire. People still talk about where these pieces should live. Since Nigeria gained independence in 1960, they have asked for the art back.

This is a big and important conversation for many countries. The art continues to show the skill of its makers. It remains a symbol of a rich and powerful history.
