Bruce Onobrakpeya is a famous artist from Nigeria who has spent over 50 years creating art. He is a painter, a sculptor, and a printmaker. Printmaking is a special way to make many copies of one image. An artist makes a picture on a plate first. Then, they press that plate onto paper to transfer the image. This allows an artist to share their work with many people.

Onobrakpeya uses many different styles to tell stories. In his early years, he used a style called Mythical Realism. This period focused on Nigerian folklore, myths, and legends. He also made art about the history of the Benin Kingdom. Some of his pieces show the beauty of nature. Other works focus on protecting the environment. He even creates installation art using discarded materials to show why we must care for our world.

His journey as an artist began in Agbarha-Otor in Delta State. His father was an Urhobo carver. Later, Bruce moved to Benin City in Edo State. He learned art at Western Boys High School. He was inspired by teachers and many famous Nigerian artists. In 1957, he went to the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology in Zaria. There, he joined a group called the Zaria Arts Society. These students wanted to create art that showed a Nigerian identity.

Bruce is a great inventor who created many new art techniques. In 1966, he developed bronzed lino relief. This uses old linoleum blocks with a bronze color. He also created plastocast relief using resin, which is a type of plastic. He even invented a method called plastograph in 1967. This happened after a hydrochloric acid accident in his studio. He also uses metal foil to make deep, three-dimensional prints. These inventions help him make art that is uniquely Nigerian.

Today, Bruce helps many other artists grow through his work. He started the Bruce Onobrakpeya Foundation in 1999. This group holds the annual Harmattan workshop in his hometown. The foundation helps artists learn new skills and teaches people about African art. He has received many big awards for his talent. In 2006, UNESCO gave him the Living Human Treasure Award. He also won the Nigerian Creativity Award in 2010.
