He uses thousands of small aluminum pieces from recycling stations. These pieces come from the tops of drink bottles. By joining them, he turns stiff metal into something flexible. This allows his art to drape and move like real fabric. People all over the world find his work breathtaking and wonderful.

Making these sculptures is a very careful and detailed process. Anatsui gathers the metal caps and prepares them for use. He then sews the pieces together using copper wire.

This method lets him create huge compositions with many colors. He can use the caps to show bright patterns or textures. Because the metal is flexible, he can change how it hangs. This makes each installation feel unique and alive during the setup. He treats the metal almost like a painter uses colors.

Anatsui was born on February 4, 1944, in Anyako, Ghana. He was the youngest of 32 children in his family. As a young child, he loved drawing letters on a chalkboard. His school headmaster even gave him more chalk to help him practice.

Later, he studied art in Kumasi, Ghana. He earned his degree in 1968 from the College of Art and Built Environment. He also received a postgraduate diploma in 1969. He spent much of his career teaching at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. This helped him become a leader in the world of sculpture.

His art tells stories about history and culture. He often uses a concept called Sankofa, which means "go back and retrieve." This idea helps him find old Ghanaian traditions to use in new ways. He uses found objects because they carry the energy of people.

He once worked with wooden trays and broken clay pots. He noticed that even broken things can have a new purpose. For example, pot shards can be used for spiritual offerings. His metal works also reflect the history of West African textiles and cloth.

Today, Anatsui is a global star in the art world. He was named one of the most influential people in 2023. His work has been shown in famous places like the British Museum.

He has also had big shows in New York and London. In 2007, he made special metal hangings for the Venice Biennale. These works used golds, reds, and blacks to create beautiful textures. Even though he works in a university town, his art reaches every corner of the planet.
