He is known for making large, realistic paintings of Black people. His art often looks back at very old, famous paintings called "Old Masters." Wiley uses these historic styles to show his subjects in a heroic way. He wants people to see the power and status of young African-American men. By doing this, he helps change how people see race and culture through art. His work is so important that Time magazine named him one of the most influential people in 2018.

Wiley’s way of working involves mixing the old with the new. He often chooses a pose from a famous historical painting. Then, he replaces the original person with a modern subject. For example, he might paint a man in casual streetwear instead of a soldier in old armor. He also uses bright colors and beautiful patterns. Some of these patterns come from West African textiles or Islamic architecture. He even uses everyday things, like colors from a home decor book, to make his art feel real. This creates a special mix of history and modern life.

Wiley’s journey into art began a long time ago in California. He was born in Los Angeles in 1977. His mother, Freddie Mae Wiley, signed him up for art classes to keep him busy. When he was only 11 years old, he traveled to study art near St. Petersburg, Russia. He even had a friendly competition with his twin brother to see who could paint most realistically. Later, he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. He also went to Yale University, where he earned a master's degree in 2001. In 2024, Yale even gave him an honorary degree to celebrate his skill.

One of his biggest jobs happened in 2017 when he was chosen to paint Barack Obama.

This portrait was made for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. In the painting, the former president sits on an antique chair among many plants. These plants are special symbols from his life. For instance, he used African lilies to honor Obama's father and jasmine for his time in Hawaii. Wiley also makes huge sculptures, like a 30-foot bronze statue called "Rumors of War."

One of his glass works is called "Saint Adelaide." This piece was inspired by very old windows found in Paris. Whether he is painting a president or making a glass window, Wiley uses his art to tell big, important stories.
