He is often called the most influential African artist of the 20th century. His work helped the world see modern African art in a new way. He showed that African artists could be part of the modern art world. Many people even called him "Africa's Greatest Artist." His fame helped support movements for Black Nationalists across the globe. Even the Enwonwu crater on the planet Mercury is named for him.

Enwonwu learned his craft in a very special way. He was born a twin in 1917 in Onitsha, Nigeria. His father was a skilled carver who made stools and religious images. When his father died in 1921, Ben inherited his carving tools. He spent years perfecting the art of Igbo sculpture. Later, he studied fine art under a teacher named Kenneth C. Murray. He also studied anthropology, which is the study of people and their customs. This helped him understand how to show his culture through art.

His education took him to many different places. He attended several primary schools in Nigeria between 1921 and 1931. He later studied at Government College Umuahia and Government College Ibadan. In 1944, he won a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. He attended the Slade School of Fine Art and the Ruskin School at Oxford University. In 1947, he earned a first-class diploma in fine art. He finished his postgraduate studies in 1948. These years helped him become a master of his craft.

Enwonwu had a very busy and successful career. He worked as an art teacher in several Nigerian schools. He also served as an art adviser to the Nigerian government starting in 1948. Between 1949 and 1954, he held art exhibitions in many cities. These included London, Lagos, Milan, New York City, and Boston. In 1956, Queen Elizabeth II even asked him to make a bronze portrait of her. He also worked as a professor at the University of Ife. He was a very important leader in the art world.

Many of his artworks are still famous today. His sculpture Anyanwu shows the Igbo earth goddess, Ani. You can see it on the wall of the National Museum in Lagos. He also painted a series called Tutu, which shows an Ife princess. One of those paintings was found again in a London flat in 2017. He also made a painting called "Owo Market" from 1949. His work connects the history of Nigeria to the modern world. People still look at his art to understand African identity.
