Ben studied art in many places. He went to schools in Nigeria and England. He even studied anthropology, which is the study of people and their customs. This helped him make art that showed his roots. He was one of the first African artists to win fame in Europe and the United States. Many people called him "Africa's Greatest Artist."

He made many special things. He made a bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth II. He also made a famous sculpture called Anyanwu. This sculpture shows the Igbo earth goddess, Ani.
