He was a painter, a sculptor, and a printmaker. He also worked as a lecturer at a university. People remember him because he was a master of many different arts. He could paint, carve, and even take great photographs. His work helped show the world the beauty of African art. He wanted his art to be a voice for his people.

He started with bright water colours that had lots of detail. Later, he moved to using oil paints on large canvases. He also made woodcuts, which are prints made from carved wood. He even worked with metal to make large sculptures. One famous metal sculpture he made is called The Bull. He could work on four different paintings all at once!

His journey as an artist began a long time ago.

He was born in 1943 in a place called Serenje. He started painting when he was a student in Bulawayo. By the age of fifteen, he was already having his first art show. He studied at Makerere University in Uganda and graduated in 1971. Later, he went to West Germany to study fine arts. He was the first student from south of the equator to get a special scholarship there.

Tayali's life was full of important names and places.

He lived in cities like Lusaka, Bulawayo, and Aachen. He even showed his art in big cities like London and Toronto. He met many important people, including Kenneth Kaunda, the first President of Zambia. His son, Rhodrick Tayali, grew up to be an artist too. Henry Tayali passed away in 1987 while visiting family in West Germany.

His art connects the traditions of Africa with modern styles.

He often painted scenes of everyday life, like busy markets or social gatherings. He used his art to talk about the feelings and struggles of common people. He also used his camera to take photos of important cultures. He did this so people in the future could learn about them. Today, his work is still shown in galleries all around the world.
