His journey as an artist began in the Makonde tradition. He was born around 1934 in the village of Kikwetu. His father worked on sisal plantations. Lilanga spent many years carving wood from 1961 until 1972. In 1970, he moved to the big city of Dar es Salaam. He wanted more chances to sell his sculptures and practice new art. In 1971, he started working at the House of Art. This was a special place for making African crafts.

Lilanga became an international star through many big shows. In 1977, he traveled to New York to show his work. In 1978, he went to Washington D.C. for a large group exhibition. Many of his pieces were shown there. His art was also seen in places like Japan, Italy, and Germany. He even influenced young graffiti artists in America. People loved his colorful and modern way of showing traditional spirits. His work is now kept in many important museums.

Later in his life, George faced some hard health challenges. He had diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Because of this, he had to use a wheelchair. He could not always do all the work by himself. To keep creating, he started a large workshop called an atelier. He taught many young students and relatives there. They helped him make large paintings on canvas and wood. He continued to make art until shortly before he died in 2005.
